Best software and app development companies in Chicago in 2026

Sixteen software and app development companies headquartered in Chicago or its suburbs, each with fewer than 50 staff on Clutch. Each entry lists what Clutch showed on October 18, 2026 (location, founding year, team size, rating, review count, hourly band and minimum project), then what the firm does well and what to raise on a first call. Between them they cover custom software, web apps and mobile apps. Two disclosures: most lists Google shows for this search are written by a firm that puts itself first; Deepsel, the publisher, is a remote firm, so it isn't in the ranked table and appears once, after the local-versus-remote section, with the same comparison fields as the others.
The 16 software development companies in Chicago at a glance
The order is Clutch review count, then rating, then name. More reviews means more to read, not a better firm, and a long record can stop well short of today, as Highland's, Red Foundry's and Eight Bit Studios' do. Team, rate and minimum are Clutch's listing fields; prices a firm publishes itself are quoted in its profile.
| # | Firm | Based in | Founded | Team | Clutch rating (reviews) | Hourly band | Minimum project | Best for |

How we chose the firms
We applied four rules, one after another.
- Headquartered in Chicago or its suburbs on Clutch. Suburbs such as Barrington, Schaumburg and Arlington Heights count. A "Chicago, IL" card alone doesn't: the city filter matches any listed location, which is how Dom and Tom (New York), iSpectra (Riyadh), Brash (Carlsbad, California) and mDevelopers (Warsaw) land under Chicago, and the "Serves Chicago, IL" cards at the top, Kingsmen Digital Ventures and Vention among them, are paid placements for firms based elsewhere. Simpalm was the close call: headquartered in Rockville, Maryland, with a Chicago office address on its site but no Chicago headcount on Clutch. It stays on our national list of small software development companies for startups.
- Under 50 staff on Clutch. Clutch puts the firm in its 2 to 9 or 10 to 49 employee band. Thirty-one firms named on other Chicago lists or high in the Chicago search results are bigger, so they're out: TXI (Table XI), LaunchPad Lab, Codal, Valtech (Kin + Carta), Devbridge, Rightpoint, Foxbox Digital, SPR, Velvetech, Intersog, WEZOM, Plego, 8th Light, Atomic Object, Techgropse, Forte Group, ELEKS, Simform, Synergy Labs, Xcelacore, Cepoch, Orbit Media Studios, nvisia, KitelyTech, Clique Studios, Moon Technolabs, Kodexo Labs, Trango Tech, Designli, Tekglide, Liventus. TXI appears on eleven of the lists we read, LaunchPad Lab on ten, Codal and Valtech on eight each, Devbridge on seven. Nineteen of the thirty-one sit in the 50 to 249 band and nine in 250 to 999; Valtech, ELEKS and Simform are at 1,000 or more.
- Software or app development as the main Clutch service line. Branding, marketing and managed IT shops are out. That removed Cultivate Brands (branding is 80% of its Clutch work), TechNoir Solutions (managed IT services 45%), Alpha Efficiency (a HubSpot web shop) and Vokal, whose homepage now describes a private-equity operating partner. We also couldn't verify Appigma as a Chicago team: founded 2024, its reviewers are in Switzerland and Canada and it names no engineering location.
- A Clutch profile with at least seven reviews. Four firms cleared the first three rules and missed this one: Red Squirrel Technologies (six reviews, the newest from October 2023), CSW Solutions (six, the newest from January 2019, and the site now leads with managed IT), Uptic (five, hourly rate undisclosed) and Chicago Software Solutions (five, the newest from November 2017). The rule counts reviews, not recency, so six firms that pass have had no new one in two years or more (Hashrocket, Made in Tandem, Lakeview Labs, Velan Solutions, Eight Bit Studios, Red Foundry); their profiles give the dates.
The names came from Clutch's Chicago software and app development directories: we parsed every card on October 18, 2026 (383 of 385 software firms, 334 of 335 app firms), kept the two small bands with a Chicago-area location and five or more reviews, which left 60, then read 34 Clutch profiles and the sites of 26 firms and applied the four rules. "Named on" counts come from the editorial lists that rank for the Chicago keywords. GoodFirms ratings were not used.
The 16 Chicago app and software development companies, one by one
"Good at" and "What to check" draw on each firm's own site and its Clutch profile, read October 18, 2026.
1. Neologic Custom Software
Barrington, IL (+1 location). Founded 2008. Team 10 to 49. Clutch 5.0 from 49 reviews. Hourly $100 to $149. Minimum $5,000+. neologicsoftware.com, Clutch profile.
Good at. Custom software is 70% of its Clutch work and AI 30%. The about page is the founder talking: "I'm Dmitriy Fridlyand. I've been building custom software in Chicago since 2008." (about page). It's one of four firms here with prices online: "Custom crm From $20k", "custom ai agent From $20k" and "SaaS App From $40k", under "I guarantee the price of the build in writing." (homepage, October 18, 2026). Its 49 reviews (a 5.0 average) are the most here. Newest, a director at Odyssey Pensions Limited, December 23, 2025: "They demonstrated strong project management throughout the engagement." (Clutch).
What to check. The site also says "30+ SENIOR ENGINEERS A global team executing exactly to my spec." and Clutch lists Russian and Ukrainian among its languages, so ask where your engineers sit and which of your hours they cover. Prices start at $20,000, whatever the $5,000 Clutch field says. Get the price guarantee, and a definition of a scope change, into the contract.
2. Highland
Chicago, IL. Founded 1999. Team 10 to 49. Clutch 4.9 from 47 reviews. Hourly $150 to $199. Minimum $50,000+. highlandsolutions.com, Clutch profile.
Good at. Clutch dates it to 1999, the earliest here, and it's the only firm with market research among its service lines: custom software 30%, digital strategy 15%, and market research, product design, UX/UI, low-code and web 10% each. The site claims "300+ digital products launched" and names Jon Berbaum as president; reviewers include AAOS, Gloo and the American Geophysical Union. Its financial-services page ranked fourth on Google for "custom software development chicago" on October 8, 2026. Newest review, AAOS's director of member experience, November 14, 2024: "The most impressive thing about the company is the genuine goodness of all of the people that work there." (Clutch).
What to check. Nothing new on Clutch in the 23 months since. In a $150 to $199 band, the $50,000 minimum buys 250 to 330 hours, so ask what the first phase delivers for that.
3. Red Foundry
Chicago, IL. Founded 2009. Team 10 to 49. Clutch 4.8 from 45 reviews. Hourly $150 to $199. Minimum $50,000+. redfoundry.com, Clutch profile.
Good at. Mobile app development is 60% of its Clutch work, web 20%, and React Native 70% of its listed frameworks. The about page says "100% Employee Owned", with Kerri Klun as president and CEO and Ron Franczyk, "an original founder of Red Foundry in 2009", as chief product officer (about page). Dentologie reviewed a $200,000 to $999,999 project (September 8, 2023). Newest, a sales operations director at a distribution company, September 10, 2024: "Red Foundry managed our project very well." (Clutch).
What to check. Read the 0.5-star review first. The founder of LuvDuv wrote on February 13, 2023: "Red Foundry's general lack of talent and creativity led me to decide to move on with another company." (Clutch). One bad review in 45 isn't a pattern, but ask for the firm's side. Nothing since September 2024, and a $50,000 floor at the top rate band suits a funded app more than a trial run.
4. Calibrate Software
Chicago, IL. Founded 2017. Team 10 to 49. Clutch 4.9 from 40 reviews. Hourly $50 to $99. Minimum $25,000+. calibrated.io, Clutch profile.
Good at. Mobile and web are 30% each of its Clutch work, custom software and UX/UI 15% each, AI consulting 10%. Forty reviews in nine years; the newest, July 10, 2026, is from an executive director at the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois on a $200,000 to $999,999 project: "They're professional in their approach, yet we felt our project was very important to Calibrate Software." (Clutch). The Clutch overview names Kevin Bolger as CEO; the site counts "Projects 214+ Years 8 Clients 70+".
What to check. The contact page lists a "US HQ" in Chicago and an "INTERNATIONAL HQ" in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (contact page); Clutch shows Chicago only. That likely explains the $50 to $99 band. Ask which team builds your product and which hours overlap: Ho Chi Minh City is 12 to 13 hours ahead. The contact form's budget options start at $20,000, below the $25,000 Clutch minimum.
5. Eight Bit Studios
Chicago, IL. Founded 2009. Team 2 to 9. Clutch 4.8 from 34 reviews. Hourly $150 to $199. Minimum $50,000+. eightbitstudios.com, Clutch profile.
Good at. Its Clutch work is 90% mobile apps, 10% web design. The firm is its two co-founders, Don Bora, a fractional CTO and "code-first builder" per the about page, and Steve Polacek; services include fractional CTO work and MVP development. Its 34 reviews average 4.8. The CTO of Foxtrot wrote on February 2, 2024: "The team was extremely responsive and able to get the resources assigned and up and running on a tight timeline." (Clutch). It appears on 14 of the 68 Chicago list pages we read.
What to check. The site says "Two people, no layers. We use AI agents and systems to deliver what used to require a team.", matching Clutch's 2 to 9 band, so the founders are on every call. Ask what happens to your timeline if one is out. Read the 3.5-star review (RedCompass Labs, October 19, 2023); nothing is newer than February 2024.
6. HyperSense Software
Schaumburg, IL (+1 location). Founded 2003. Team 10 to 49. Clutch 4.9 from 31 reviews. Hourly $50 to $99. Minimum $25,000+. hypersense-software.com, Clutch profile.
Good at. AI agents are 40% of its Clutch work, mobile 20%, UX/UI and web 15% each, custom software 10%, and the current offer is an "AI Feature Sprint: Deployed Agent in 4 Weeks", no price shown. The homepage names Dan Negrea as co-founder and CEO. Its 31 reviews average 4.9, with DermPro Connect, a Chicago founder, among them (February 8, 2025). Newest, the director of marketing at Mobility Plus, February 11, 2026: "We found HyperSense Software Inc's willingness to provide support greater than any we've encountered before." (Clutch).
What to check. The model is plain, "US office in Chicago, EU engineering hub in Bucharest" (about page), and that's what the $50 to $99 band buys. Size is murkier: Clutch says 10 to 49, the about page "40+ engineers and specialists", the contact page "60+ engineers and specialists across Chicago and Bucharest". Ask how many sit in Illinois. Bucharest is eight hours ahead of Chicago.
7. Vault Innovation
Chicago, IL (+ Raleigh, NC). Founded 2012. Team 10 to 49. Clutch 4.6 from 28 reviews. Hourly $150 to $199. Minimum $10,000+. vaultinnovation.com, Clutch profile.
Good at. A general product shop: custom software and mobile 25% each of its Clutch work, UX/UI 20%, AI and web 15% each, and "Over 60 products launched" since 2012, per the site. Jeffrey Dirrenberger is CEO. Its $10,000 minimum is the lowest of the seven firms here billing $150 to $199, so it's the one in that band to try on a small job. Newest, a senior operations coordinator at TRB + Associates, October 22, 2025: "Their ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with our team and goals is impressive." (Clutch).
What to check. The 4.6 is the lowest rating here, and the newest review is a 4.0. Read the 1.0-star review from the founder of a social networking platform, February 9, 2022: "The project manager was an efficient communicator but the project overall was managed very poorly." (Clutch). Then ask what changed. Vault also publishes "Top Software Development Companies in Chicago (2026)" and "Top Mobile App Development Companies in Chicago (2026)" and ranks itself first on both (its software list). The buyer questions are useful; the rankings are marketing.
8. Caxy Consulting
Chicago, IL. Founded 2000. Team 10 to 49. Clutch 4.9 from 19 reviews. Hourly $150 to $199. Minimum $50,000+. caxy.com, Clutch profile.
Good at. Custom software is 30% of its Clutch work, AI development and IT strategy 15% each, AI consulting and mobile 10% each. The site's line is "25 Years building software in Chicago", and it names tastytrade, Wind Creek Hospitality and Chicago Public Media as clients. Newest review, the CEO of Think Glink Inc., August 24, 2026: "Their innovation and personal smarts are impressive." (Clutch).
What to check. Nineteen reviews in 26 years is a short public record; ask for two clients you can call. Clutch says founded 2000, the site 1999. More important: a $50,000 minimum at the top rate band and no founder or CEO named on the pages we read, so ask who will answer for your project.
9. TangoCode
Chicago, IL. Founded 2015. Team 10 to 49. Clutch 4.9 from 15 reviews. Hourly $100 to $149. Minimum $50,000+. tangocode.com, Clutch profile.
Good at. The homepage title, "AI-Powered Martech Solutions", names the specialty. AI development is 45% of its Clutch work, custom software 30%, mobile and web 10% each, and its Clutch summary calls it "a Chicago-based, women and minority-owned firm" that "builds custom MarTech solutions" with the help of a nearshore team. The 15 reviews average 4.9. Newest, February 1, 2026, a director of product management at TalentNeuron rating a $200,000 to $999,999 project 4.0: "They consistently asked the right questions, challenged assumptions, and proposed better approaches." (Clutch).
What to check. The summary doesn't say where the nearshore team is, so ask, and ask who leads it. A January 16, 2026 review hands you another question: "We would've valued deeper technical discussions around architectural decisions to ensure full alignment." (Clutch profile). The $50,000 floor rules out a test project, and the newest review is a 4.0; read it in full.
10. Hristov Development
Chicago, IL (+ Aguascalientes, Mexico). Founded 2013. Team 10 to 49. Clutch 5.0 from 12 reviews. Hourly $25 to $49. Minimum $5,000+. hristovdevelopment.com, Clutch profile.
Good at. Ten Clutch service lines at 10% each, in practice custom software, MVPs, web, mobile and automation, from a team split between Chicago and Aguascalientes, Mexico. The homepage offers "Explore $2k Prototypes" (homepage), and two of the three newest reviews are projects under $10,000. Twelve reviews average 5.0. Newest, rated 4.5, a director of business development at ICON Bunks, September 21, 2026: "They brought both the technical expertise and communication skills needed to keep the project moving forward." (Clutch).
What to check. The homepage title spells out the model: "Boutique Nearshore Software Development | Hristov Development (Chicago & Mexico)". Its $25 to $49 band is the Mexico team's rate. Aguascalientes is on Chicago time, or an hour behind in summer, so ask who manages the work. The prototypes page returned a 404 on October 18, 2026; ask what $2,000 buys. No founder is named on the pages we read.
11. Velan Solutions
Schaumburg, IL. Founded 2017. Team 2 to 9. Clutch 5.0 from 11 reviews. Hourly $100 to $149. Minimum $10,000+. velansolutions.com, Clutch profile.
Good at. A Schaumburg firm with a broad mix: web 30%, custom software and mobile 25% each, CRM and IT strategy 10% each. Eleven reviews average 5.0, among them 911 Tech Inc. on a $200,000 to $999,999 project; its CEO wrote on January 3, 2024: "With the quality and value provided, Velan Solutions, LLC has become the sole developer for our projects." (Clutch).
What to check. The site says "Trusted by 180+ clients for over 15 years"; Clutch says founded 2017. Ask which is right. Nothing on Clutch since January 2024, a team of 2 to 9, no founder named on the homepage. The $100 to $149 band and $10,000 floor make it one of the cheaper entry points among firms naming no office abroad, but phone two references first.
12. Hashrocket
Chicago, IL (+ Jacksonville Beach, FL). Founded 2008. Team 10 to 49. Clutch 5.0 from 10 reviews. Hourly $150 to $199. Minimum $25,000+. hashrocket.com, Clutch profile.
Good at. A specialist: Ruby on Rails, Elixir and React, with web at 55% of its Clutch work, mobile 35% and e-commerce 10%, and one way of working: "We develop exclusively in pairs". Marian Phelan is CEO. Newest review, the product manager of a youth sports management tool, June 28, 2019: "The tools Hashrocket developed have delivered about 100% growth in almost every metric that we're tracking." (Clutch).
What to check. That review is seven years old, and ten reviews is a short record for an 18-year-old firm. The other office is in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, and the site's phone has a 904 (Florida) area code, so ask how many pairs sit in Chicago. Pairing puts two engineers on every hour: ask whether the band is per person or per pair, and what $25,000 buys in pair-hours.
13. Lakeview Labs
Chicago, IL. Founded 2013. Team 2 to 9. Clutch 5.0 from 9 reviews. Hourly $100 to $149. Minimum $10,000+. lakeviewlabs.io, Clutch profile.
Good at. Mobile apps are 60% of its Clutch work, custom software and app modernization 15% each, and the Clutch summary sets a cap: "We purposely keep our agency small (max of 7 annual project)". Its three named reviewers, Nande, CURE and Recipe Revolution, are all Chicago companies. Nine reviews average 5.0; the founder of Nande wrote on October 18, 2020: "They were genuinely invested in the success of our app and they became trusted partners during the process." (Clutch).
What to check. At seven projects a year, ask first whether a slot is open this quarter. The newest review is from October 2020, and the team page gives the CEO as "Patrick", first name only. Its office address is 1871's former suite in the Merchandise Mart, which 1871 left in February 2025 (Tribune, February 26, 2025), so confirm where you'd meet.
14. Made in Tandem
Chicago, IL. Founded 2010. Team 10 to 49. Clutch 4.9 from 9 reviews. Hourly $150 to $199. Minimum $100,000+. madeintandem.com, Clutch profile.
Good at. Custom software is 50% of its Clutch work, BI and big data 20%, cloud 20%, strategy 10%. JC Grubbs founded it in 2011 as DevMynd Software. It's the only firm here pricing fixed sprints on its homepage: "$40K-$75K · 2-4 weeks Product Design Sprint", "$40K-$60K · 2-3 weeks Data Readiness Assessment", "$25K-$50K · 2-3 weeks AI Opportunity Assessment" and "$15K-$40K · 1-2 weeks Technical Due Diligence" (homepage, October 18, 2026). Newest review, a director at Epiq Solutions, April 8, 2020: "If any issues came up, they were quickly resolved." (Clutch).
What to check. Its $100,000 floor is the highest here. The newest of its nine reviews dates from April 2020, a thin record for a firm Clutch dates to 2010 (the site says 2011). The site also says "Working Internationally", so ask where the team sits. If you only want a sprint, ask whether it clears the minimum alone; the smallest starts at $15,000.
15. TwinCore
Chicago, IL. Founded 2011. Team 10 to 49. Clutch 4.8 from 9 reviews. Hourly $25 to $49. Minimum $25,000+. twincore.net, Clutch profile.
Good at. A .NET shop whose ten Clutch service lines, at 10% each, come down to custom software, CRM and ERP work and SaaS platforms. Igor Prokofjev is co-founder and CEO. The nine reviews average 4.8 and are recent: databridge AG on November 11, 2025, and a logistics company in Germany on June 5, 2026, rating a project under $10,000 at 4.5: "At all times, I felt I was working with an honest, capable team." (Clutch).
What to check. The about page lists "HQ - North America" in Chicago and a "Development Center-Europe Estonia" (about page), and seven of the nine Clutch reviewers are in Europe, one in Chicago, one in Florida. So the $25 to $49 band buys an Estonian team eight hours ahead of Chicago, so far serving mostly European clients. TwinCore also publishes "9 Best Custom Software Development Services in Illinois, Chicago" and puts itself first (its Illinois list, modified October 7, 2026).
16. 26bitz
Arlington Heights, IL (+ Kraków, Poland). Founded 2024. Team 2 to 9. Clutch 5.0 from 7 reviews. Hourly $25 to $49. Minimum $5,000+. 26bitz.com, Clutch profile.
Good at. The youngest firm here, founded 2024, with a stated niche: "26bitz builds software for digital health startups, MedTech companies, and healthcare nonprofits". Custom software is 45% of its Clutch work, AI 35%, mobile 20%. The homepage states the price, "Projects start at $5,000, billed hourly at $25–49 depending on the role." (homepage), and promises "Your first call is with Andrey, our CEO." Seven reviews in about two years average 5.0; the product owner at Hand to Hold wrote on July 14, 2026: "When roadblocks happen, they communicate them quickly." (Clutch).
What to check. Seven reviews is the thinnest record here. Clutch lists a second location in Kraków, Poland, seven hours ahead of Chicago; ask which roles bill $25 and which $49, who sits in Illinois, and for one client you can phone. At a $5,000 minimum it's a sensible place for a small paid test.
Hiring in Chicago versus hiring remote: custom software rates
On its Chicago app page, Clutch says most Chicago app firms charge "$100 – $175 per hour", custom mobile projects run "$40,000 – $150,000", and startups, it says, "often begin with a $15,000 – $25,000 Minimum Viable Product" (Clutch app developers in Chicago, ratings updated October 18, 2026). The software page gives "$100 – $149 for senior talents while blended team rates average $75 – $120", early MVPs at "around $30,000" and a full custom build "between $75,000 to over $250,000" (Clutch software developers in Chicago). Web developers are put at "$100–$200" an hour (Clutch web developers in Chicago).
The listing cards on those pages tell a different story. By our own count of every firm on Clutch's Chicago software and app lists on October 18, 2026, 29% of the 262 software firms that show a band charge under $50 an hour and 44% charge $100 or more. The 239 app firms skew cheaper: 42% under $50, 34% at $100 or more. Under-$50 rates peak among firms with 50 to 249 staff, where offshore companies with a Chicago address sit. Among software firms with 2 to 49 staff, half charge $100 or more.
Our sixteen rows show the same split. Every firm here with a band under $100 names an engineering location outside the US: Calibrate (Ho Chi Minh City), HyperSense (Bucharest), Hristov (Aguascalientes, Mexico), TwinCore (Estonia) and 26bitz (Kraków). The rest bill $100 to $199, though two of them, Neologic and TangoCode, describe a global or nearshore team, so the band narrows the question without settling it. Forte Group, which sells distributed delivery itself, puts it this way: "The pricing spread is the giveaway", and firms with Chicago-based engineers "tend to charge $100–200 per hour" (Forte Group, August 24, 2026). Vault, a Chicago shop, gives an FAQ entry on its own list to "How do I verify a Chicago software company is really based in Chicago?" (Vault Innovation, August 28, 2026).
Compare that with what Chicago engineers earn. The metro employed 41,210 software developers at a mean $61.52 an hour in May 2023 (BLS, May 2023). By May 2025, computer and mathematical occupations in Chicago averaged $54.84 an hour against $57.73 nationally (BLS, May 2025), so Chicago tech pay runs a little under the national average. A local agency billing $150 to $199 charges roughly two and a half to three times the developer's mean wage.
For the remote side, Clutch's national guide puts US software firms at $50 to $99 an hour, India, Ukraine, the Philippines and Mexico at $25 to $49 and Poland at $50 to $99, and says "most software development companies listed on Clutch charge between $24–$49/hour" (Clutch pricing guide, updated September 21, 2026).
Chicago buyers rarely post about hiring locally; our Reddit searches mostly turned up vendor lists. Three threads were real. In November 2023 a home goods store owner in the Chicago suburbs, with about 200 eBay listings and a "$3,000" budget, asked r/forhire for an e-commerce site (r/forhire, November 10, 2023).
One reply priced the local option: "Normal rates for any dev based in Chicago would surely quote for $40-70 ph" (r/forhire, November 2023). In June 2025 a founder in the suburbs asked r/AppDevelopers for a partner who is "Chicago area based"; the top reply was a Chicago developer offering a call (r/AppDevelopers, June 23, 2025). A small retail shop asking r/smallbusiness about a website in March 2026 heard that setup, design, product pages and SEO "should run you 1500-3000 tops, not 5k" (r/smallbusiness, March 15, 2026). None of these buyers was shopping at a $50,000 minimum, and ten of the sixteen firms above start at $25,000 or more.
For scale: Chicagoland's digital tech sector employed over 99,000 people and produced $39.3 billion of economic output in 2024 (World Business Chicago, September 12, 2025). Chicago startups raised $385 million in the first quarter of 2026, by PitchBook's count (Chicago Business Journal, April 16, 2026). Remote work has reached the startup hub itself: 1871, where Lakeview Labs lists its office, left the Merchandise Mart in February 2025 after 13 years, as more of its members built their companies remotely (Chicago Tribune, February 26, 2025).
Consider working remotely
Deepsel publishes this page, and since we are a remote firm and the thread above names Chicago, we include our details down here. The prices below are our prices.
Deepsel
Wilmington, Delaware company (registered office); team based in Hanoi, Vietnam. Founded 2019. Team 1 to 3. No Clutch reviews yet. Hourly None (flat prices): $3,000 one-week sprint; $4,000 a month half-day or $8,000 full-time per senior engineer; $15,000 a month fractional CTO with build team. Minimum $3,000 (the sprint). deepsel.com. Best for: Non-technical founders who want prices published and the code in their own accounts.
Good at. Deepsel Inc. is a Delaware company. The engineers are senior, sit in Hanoi, Vietnam, and work a daily window that overlaps US business hours, led by the founder, Tim Tran. The work is AI and automation, custom software, web and mobile apps, SaaS platforms, MVPs, legacy modernization and a fractional CTO who builds. Live products: Clubloungery, a booking marketplace; FitFoodies, a consumer app; and eIAM, the Swiss federal administration's central login, whose front end was replaced with no downtime. More project info are on the projects page. Contracts run month to month with a 30-day money-back guarantee, and the IP, repositories and servers are yours from the first commit. Prices and terms are on the software development for startups page.
What to check. No Clutch reviews, so judge us on live products and contract terms. The shipped projects are European. The target market is US startups. The team is small, so there's a waitlist when it's full, and meetings happen inside the US overlap window. And we wrote this page, so read this row with the same suspicion as the others.
Other cities, with the same four rules and the same disclosure: software and app development companies in Dallas, New York's small software firms, app developers in Houston and small software companies in Austin.
Chicago software and mobile app development: frequently asked questions
How much does an app or custom software cost from a Chicago firm?
Clutch's Chicago pages put a custom mobile project at $40,000 to $150,000 (Clutch, October 18, 2026) and a full custom build at $75,000 to more than $250,000 (Clutch software page, October 18, 2026). Published prices on this list start between $2,000 (Hristov's prototypes) and $20,000 (Neologic, which asks $40,000 for a SaaS app). Deepsel's sprint is $3,000, and an MVP under the fractional CTO retainer comes to $15,000 to $30,000. Our MVP cost breakdown goes line by line. For bigger builds, see what custom software costs in 2026. The SaaS cost guide adds billing and hosting.
What do Chicago software developers charge per hour?
Per Clutch's Chicago pages, app firms charge $100 to $175 an hour, senior software talent $100 to $149 and web developers $100 to $200 (Clutch, October 18, 2026). On this list, three firms bill $25 to $49, two $50 to $99, four $100 to $149 and seven $150 to $199. Chicago software developers averaged $61.52 an hour in May 2023 (BLS). Deepsel's $8,000 a month for a full-time senior engineer is about $50 an hour over 160 hours.
How long does a custom software or app build take?
Published durations here cover single phases: Made in Tandem's design sprint takes two to four weeks (homepage), and HyperSense promises a deployed AI agent in four (homepage). Deepsel's sprint is one week; a first MVP under the fractional CTO retainer takes one to two months. For a full build, ask for dated milestones. Billing $150 to $199, a $50,000 minimum is 250 to 330 hours, about two months of one full-time engineer.
How do I check that a Chicago firm is really in Chicago, and who writes the code?
Read the Clutch reviews newest first, Clutch's default order: seven firms here have nothing newer than 2024. Compare the firm's site with Clutch: Calibrate's site lists a second headquarters in Vietnam, HyperSense gives three headcounts, and Velan claims over 15 years against Clutch's 2017. On this list, every band under $100 came with engineers abroad. Ask where your project's people will sit and whether any work is subcontracted. Our guide to choosing a software development company has the full checklist.
Should I hire a Chicago firm or a remote team?
Settle accountability and time overlap first, then price. A Chicago firm billing $150 to $199 puts people in the room, which Forte Group, a seller of the other model, says is what "$150–200 per hour" pays for (Forte Group, August 2026). Remote teams at $25 to $99 buy more hours and a time difference to manage, and five of the sixteen firms above already work that way. Deepsel's engineers are in Hanoi, with a daily US overlap window.
What is the minimum project size at these firms?
On Clutch, from $5,000 (Neologic, Hristov and 26bitz) to $100,000 (Made in Tandem), and ten of the sixteen ask $25,000 or more; the table has each firm's figure. Check the field against published prices (Neologic's start at $20,000). Deepsel's smallest engagement is the $3,000 one-week sprint.
Can a Chicago firm take over a project another vendor started?
Yes; Lakeview Labs, for one, puts app modernization at 15% of its Clutch work. Before anyone quotes, get the code and accounts audited, put the repositories, servers and app store listings in your name, and fix the first milestone's price. Deepsel's $3,000 sprint spends one week on the existing codebase and ships the critical fixes inside it; our software project rescue page explains how.
Is Deepsel the best company on this list, and did anyone pay to be on it?
No, and no. The ranking runs on Clutch review count, then rating, then name, and Deepsel has no Clutch reviews, so it sits outside the table. Neologic, Highland and Red Foundry have the longest records (45 to 49 reviews), and none of the seven firms billing $150 to $199 names an engineering office abroad. Deepsel fits someone who wants published prices, code in their own accounts and one senior person accountable, within a daily overlap window. Nobody paid to appear here, was asked to, or was told in advance.
