Fractional CTO cost in 2026: rates, retainers and what you get

A fractional CTO costs $150 to $250 an hour, or $9,000 to $15,000 a month for a typical 15 hours a week, according to Go Fractional's marketplace benchmark as of October 2026. Vendor price lists stretch that to $5,000 to $15,000 a month for one to two days a week and $18,000 to $25,000 for three or more. Every one of those numbers buys advice. The engineers who build the product are a second bill, and you're the one who hires and manages them. Most cost guides skip that part. It's the part that sets your real budget. For comparison, Deepsel's fractional CTO service is $15,000 a month with the engineers included.
Four ways a fractional CTO charges you
There are four price models. You'll run into the third one most.
Hourly
Hourly is the advisory model. You pay for calls and reviews, by the hour. Go Fractional's live benchmark (18 job posts, 930 candidate profiles) puts the middle 50% of postings at $150 to $250 an hour, average $209, as of October 8, 2026. Vendor guides run wider. CTO on Demand lists $200 to $400 an hour. Truvisory says $150 to $500, with AI, security and due-diligence specialists at $600 to $1,000 and up.
Day rate
A day rate is the hourly model with a minimum attached. You book the day, you pay for the day. Fractionus, a hiring bench, reports a US average of $1,645 a day from 75 verified rates. That works out to about $206 an hour, and most of their engagements run one to three days a week.
Monthly retainer
This is the shape you'll see most: a fixed monthly fee for a rough number of hours. Go Fractional's benchmark converts to $9,000 to $15,000 a month at 15 hours a week. CTO on Demand puts most retainers at $5,000 to $15,000 a month for 10 to 20 hours a week, and near-half-time work at $18,000 to $25,000. Kompella's list prices one day a week at $8,000 to $12,000, two days at $12,000 to $18,000, and three or more at $18,000 to $25,000. Those last two are vendors' asking prices. Treat them that way.
Equity
Equity sweetens the deal. It almost never replaces the fee. CTO on Demand suggests 0.25% to 1% "for a genuine multi-year commitment" and calls equity on top of full-rate cash a red flag. Truvisory puts the typical grant at 0.5% to 2%. Atta's guide says equity knocks 20% to 40% off the cash fee in exchange for 0.25% to 1%.
What drives the price
Three things move the number. The big one is hours. Fifteen hours a week at Go Fractional's $209 average is about $13,600 a month, which is where the $9,000 to $15,000 band comes from.
Seniority and specialty come next. AI, security and compliance work sits at the top of the band, and Truvisory's $600 to $1,000 for specialists is the clearest example.
The third is advice versus execution, and it's the one to watch. The moment the engagement includes writing code or running sprints, you're buying engineering time. Most vendors quote that separately, or tell you to go hire.
Engagement models and their prices, side by side
The same job gets sold under several names. The prices differ, and so does the answer to the question that sets your real budget, which is who builds the product.
| Engagement model | Time | Typical US price | Who builds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fractional CTO, advise-only | 10 to 20 hours a week | $9,000 to $15,000 a month (Go Fractional, October 2026); vendors $5,000 to $25,000 | Engineers you hire and manage yourself |
| Part-time CTO | Fixed hours a week | $3,000 to $15,000 a month by hours (McKelvey, vendor) | Engineers you hire and manage yourself |
| Interim CTO | Full-time, 3 to 12 months | $20,000 to $40,000 (CTO on Demand); $25,000 to $45,000 (KORE1) | Your existing team |
| CTO as a service | 5 to 15 hours a week | $5,000 to $15,000 a month (Atta) | Sometimes the vendor's own team, billed extra |
| Full-time CTO | Permanent | $157,000 average startup salary (Kruze) to $325,186 total pay (Glassdoor), plus benefits, equity, recruiting | The team they hire |
| Deepsel fractional CTO | Month-to-month retainer | $15,000 a month, no equity | Senior engineers, included in the retainer |
A part-time CTO is the same retainer with the hours written into the contract. Justin McKelvey's price list runs from $3,000 a month at 5 to 8 hours a week up to $15,000 at 20 or more. An interim CTO is the opposite shape, full-time but temporary, three to twelve months, priced like a monthly executive salary: $20,000 to $40,000 on CTO on Demand's page, $25,000 to $45,000 on KORE1's. CTO as a service is the subscription framing agencies like (same work, friendlier invoice), and Atta prices it at $5,000 to $15,000 a month for 5 to 15 hours a week. Now look down the last column. In every row except ours, the engineers are a separate line in your budget.
The hidden cost of advise-only: you still hire and manage the team
Fifteen hours a week buys you the architecture and the roadmap, plus a senior voice in your hiring interviews. It doesn't buy code. Someone still has to write it, and that someone is a hire you make and then manage yourself.
Put a number on it. The median US software developer earned $135,980 in May 2025, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That's about $11,300 a month in salary alone. Kruze's payroll data puts a startup's total employment cost 25% to 35% above base. So two developers on those terms cost $28,000 to $31,000 a month, about twice the retainer of the CTO who advises them. And for the 25 hours a week the CTO is elsewhere, they report to you.
Contractors and offshore agencies cut the salary line (our custom software development cost guide has the hourly rates by region). They also make you the project manager (usually the job you were trying to get out of). One interim CTO describes what he walks into on software project rescue jobs: "an unusable MVP, zero documentation". The fix is one accountable person, someone who makes the decisions and whose own team ships the code.
What a full-time CTO costs, for comparison
Start with cash. Glassdoor lists average total pay of $325,186, with the 25th to 75th percentile at $245,593 to $438,495 (fetched October 2026). Payscale's 2026 average is $183,950. For a startup, payroll data is the better guide. Kruze's data from over 250 VC-backed startups put the average CTO salary at $157,000 and the median at $150,000 in 2024, with seed-stage non-founder CTOs at $190,000.
Benefits and payroll taxes come next. The BLS June 2026 release puts benefits at 30.0% of employer cost across private industry, which is about 43% on top of wages. Kruze's startup figure is 25% to 35%. On a $190,000 CTO, that lands at $240,000 to $270,000 a year.
Equity is the third line. Index Ventures' guide says a hired C-level executive typically gets about 1% of fully diluted equity, with a range of 0.8% to 1.5%.
The search is the line people forget. Permanent CTO searches run two to six months (Fractionus) or four to five (CodeStringers). A retained search usually costs a third of base, per Prommer's rate page (a vendor's figure), so about $63,000 on $190,000.
Add it up: $240,000 to $270,000 a year, about 1% of the company, a $60,000-plus search fee and four to six months of waiting. All of that before a single engineer. Go Fractional's shorthand is that a fractional CTO at about $150,000 a year is "roughly 60% of the $250,000 loaded annual cost of a full-time hire".
What $15,000 a month buys at Deepsel versus an advise-only retainer
Our Technical Leadership retainer is $15,000 a month. That's the top of Go Fractional's 15-hour band, and on price alone it looks like every other fractional CTO. The difference is what's inside the number.
- A fractional CTO who takes charge of your technology and is personally on the hook for it. Tim Tran, Deepsel's founder, leads every engagement. We call the role a Fractional Founder, because the person making the architecture and product decisions is the same person who builds.
- Senior engineers on the same retainer. Khuong Pham (7+ years of full-stack React and Python) and Trang Hoang (QA, 6 years of test automation). You see working software every two weeks.
- Investor and tech-diligence support, plus a monthly scorecard written in plain English.
- Terms that let you leave. Month-to-month, 30 days' notice, no termination fee. Money-back in the first 30 days. IP assigned from the first commit under a US-jurisdiction agreement, with the repos and servers sitting in your own accounts. Any engineer replaced within 7 days. And a client-scored Happiness Index, where any month under 50 is refunded.
An advise-only retainer at the same price buys about 15 hours a week of an executive's time, and an empty chair where the engineers should be. We can cover both at one price partly because the team works from Hanoi, Vietnam, on a daily overlap window with US clients, under a Delaware corporation.
Two kinds of founder should skip it. If you already have a technical lead, what you need is capacity, and our Senior Product Engineer retainer ($4,000 a month half-day, $8,000 full-time) is the cheaper buy. If you need a full-time executive in the building, hire one.
Two worked examples
Pre-seed: non-technical founder, MVP in two months
Advise-only route. A fractional CTO at Go Fractional's $9,000 to $15,000 a month, for two months, is $18,000 to $30,000. Two developers at the BLS median, loaded at Kruze's 25% to 35%, add another $57,000 to $61,000, once you've spent the weeks finding them. Total: $75,000 to $91,000.
Deepsel route. $15,000 a month, fractional CTO and engineers together (the software development for startups page has the week-by-week plan). A typical startup MVP ships inside a one- to two-month engagement, so the bill is $15,000 to $30,000, which our MVP development cost guide sets against market prices. Then you step back to $0 a month and keep the code, the docs and the roadmap.
Seed: funded, product to build, Series A ahead
Full-time CTO. $190,000 in cash (Kruze's seed-stage non-founder average) becomes $240,000 to $270,000 loaded. Add about 1% of the company, a $63,000 recruiter fee and a four- to six-month search. Two engineers at $340,000 to $370,000 loaded bring year one to about $640,000 to $700,000, plus the equity.
Advise-only fractional CTO. Two days a week at Kompella's $12,000 to $18,000 is $144,000 to $216,000 a year. With the same two engineers, $480,000 to $580,000, and you run the team between the CTO's two days.
Deepsel. $180,000 a year with the fractional CTO and senior engineers included, plus $8,000 a month for each extra full-time senior engineer. No equity. One caveat, and it's a real one: by Series A, investors expect a CTO on the team. We're the stepping stone, with diligence support built in, and when you hire that CTO you hand them a documented codebase.
How to budget for a fractional CTO
- Decide whether you're buying advice or shipped software. If it's advice, put the engineers on the same sheet. They're the larger number.
- Budget to a milestone rather than a year. An MVP, or the diligence package for your next round.
- Count your own hours managing the team. It's the cost most spreadsheets leave at zero.
- Pay cash and keep the equity small. 0.25% to 1% for a multi-year commitment, and never on top of a full-rate fee.
- Insist on exit terms. Month-to-month, IP and servers in your accounts, a documented handover. If the CTO also sells you the dev team, those terms guard against the conflict of interest fractional CTOs themselves warn about.
Fractional CTO cost: frequently asked questions
How much does a fractional CTO charge?
Go Fractional's October 2026 benchmark puts the middle 50% of postings at $150 to $250 an hour (average $209), which comes to $9,000 to $15,000 a month for a typical 15-hour week. Fractionus reports a US day-rate average of $1,645. Vendor lists run $5,000 to $25,000 a month depending on days per week. None of those include the engineers who build; they're a separate cost.
How much do fractional CTOs make?
Depends how many clients they stack. At Go Fractional's October 2026 average of $209 an hour and 15 hours a week, one client is worth about $13,600 a month, and Go Fractional quotes about $150,000 a year. Glassdoor's self-reported average for the title is $126,183, from a small number of entries.
How much does a CTO cost?
A full-time US CTO averages $157,000 in cash at VC-backed startups (Kruze payroll data, median $150,000), $183,950 on Payscale and $325,186 in average total pay on Glassdoor. On top of that, add 25% to 35% for payroll taxes and benefits (Kruze), about 1% in equity for a hired executive (Index Ventures), a recruiter fee and a two- to six-month search. Then add the engineers.
Should I pay a fractional CTO in equity?
Mostly no. Fractional grants are small, 0.25% to 1% for a multi-year commitment (CTO on Demand) or 0.5% to 2% (Truvisory), and they usually trade for a 20% to 40% cash discount (Atta). Equity on top of full-rate cash is a red flag. Founders on r/startups who've done it say pay cash at early stage. Deepsel's retainer takes no equity.
If you're a non-technical founder pricing the whole job, product built and shipped with one person accountable for it, Deepsel's fractional CTO service is $15,000 a month, month-to-month, with the first 30 days money-back.
